New Medical Treatment Statistics Report Highlights Workers Compensation Injury Treatment Data Across Pennsylvania For Policy Years 2018-2020

The Pennsylvania Compensation Rating Bureau (PCRB) has released its first Medical Treatment Statistics Report. Based on policy years 2018-2020, the report highlights workers compensation data for office and physical medicine visits, surgery, prescription drugs, and prescriptions with opioids. “The data compiled in this report provides a complete snapshot of vital treatment statistics by comparing Unit and Medical data,” says Dawn Belfus, PCRB’s Vice President, Data Services. “These types of reports will help our members and other industry stakeholders to identify emerging trends and understand marketplace implications.”

Report highlights include:

    • 80% of all workers compensation claims had at least one office and physical medicine visit, with other upper extremities requiring the most visits (37%).
    • The median number of physical medicine visits is 11, ranging from one visit for head injuries to as many as 55 visits for shoulder and upper arm injuries.
    • 28% of workers compensation claims required at least one surgery, with other upper extremities requiring the most surgeries (47%).
    • 29% of workers compensation claims had prescription costs, of which 17% were opioid prescriptions.
